Department of Forest Ecology and Management
The department includes 90 people of which 12 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and to progress the principles of forest ecosystem management. For more information, http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-ecology-management/
We are looking for a postdoc for a project with an orientation towards history of ideas, on how forests and naturalness are associated with different forms of forest management. Throughout history, conflicts about the forest have recurrently been arising because of scientists’ and other stakeholders’ dissimilar ethical standpoints. The conflict stretches from research oriented towards nature conservation, which tend to see the forest as a natural system and human impressions as a disturbance—and therefore as something bad; and research oriented towards forest production, which sees the forest as a cropping system, and forest management and other human impressions as desirable steps away from e.g. mismanaged forest stands—and therefore as something good. Even though the debate consists of many different positions, the schism tends to divide into two incompatible positions which influences the forest debate even today.
Duties:
In the project, such scientific standpoints on forests and naturalness shall be historically analyzed, with the aim of problematizing and processing contemporary and future conflicts. The project’s empirical focus rests on 20th century Sweden—with geographical and temporal comparisons. This idea historical project takes its point of departure in science and technology studies, and contains interdisciplinary cooperation. The research work entails analysis of historical texts and source materials in relation to their historical contexts, but also analysis of how the historical contexts can contribute to an understanding, as well as a development, of today’s forest debate.
Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a PhD in the history of ideas and sciences or a similar discipline, as well as documented experience of research on forest history and history of science. Experience from working with STS-perspectives and the historical development in Sweden is highly desirable. The position is intended for junior scientists and we are preferably looking for applicants that have received their PhD not later than three years ago.
